The Civil Service Rank & File Network is holding its first national conference on 2nd February. Very recently, we discovered that at least one member of the PCS National Executive Committee had indicated attendance, via the Facebook event. This provoked internal discussion which led to our withdraw their invitation and to take the same approach to all NEC reps and full time officers.
From the start, the intention of the CSRF Network has been to mobilise workers at a grassroots level in order to both pressure the union leadership and act independently. In so doing, we maintain our independence from the bureaucracy and the leadership of all trade unions organising within the civil service. Allowing members of that same leadership to be involved in our decision making would by its very nature compromise what the rank and file network is.
This decision does not preclude us from liaising with or supporting actions called by the union leadership. This matter and the criteria for joining the Network will no doubt be debated further at Conference. However for now it is the feeling of those involved in organising the conference that this is the right course of action to take.
The CSRF Network reiterates that, beyond the national leadership of the civil service unions, all rank and file workers in the civil service are welcome and encouraged to attend on 2nd February. If you believe that workers should have direct control over our own workplace struggles, please join us and help us discuss how we move forward to make that goal a reality.
Intent to attend, proposals for debate and solidarity greetings can be sent to csrfnetwork [at] gmail.com
