Defend Jon Bigger – 10 April

The Civil Service Rank & File Network supports the fight for the withdrawal of the redundancy notice from long-standing PCS branch secretary, Jon Bigger. He was declared surplus in 2010 and, despite the employer claiming they would make every effort to find him an alternative post, a compulsory redundancy notice was issued to him last month.

Jon applied for numerous roles within the Home Office, many of which he was the only candidate for. On each occasion he was forced to take a formal interview and even had to sit a two-hour test for a job in an area where he had previously worked. He’s been issued a redundancy notice at a time when several posts are being advertised at his grade.

Jon’s appeal against his redundancy is taking place on 10th April at 1pm. In solidarity, CSRF are calling for a picket of the Home Office in London and a communications blockade of the permanent secretary Mark Sedwill.

Picket the Home Office

Whilst Jon’s appeal is going on we want a large, noisy presence at the headquarters of the Home Office. They have to know that we will not accept the victimisation of workplace activists and support all workers’ right to organise.

Wednesday 10 April, 12.30-15.30pm
Home Office HQ
2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF

Whether you are a civil servant or not, please come along and stand united for Jon. Bring banners and flags and be prepared to make some noise.

RSVP on the Facebook event here.

Communications blockade of Mark Sedwill

Mark Sedwill is the permanent secretary for the Home Office. We want to make sure that he is well aware of Jon’s case and cannot simply ignore opposition to victimisation in the hope that it will fade away.

For the full day of Jon’s appeal, we are asking supporters to block up Sedwill’s lines of communication and make sure that he has to face the anger over his department’s actions.

Telephone Number: 0207 035 0197
Other extensions: 8806, 8808, 8809, 8765, 8851, 8812

Fax: 0870 336 9037
Send Free faxes via input the number as +44 (leave out 0)

Full text of entire books to copy and paste for faxes available here: e.g.

Please also engage with Sedwill and the Home Office on Twitter:

Even before the communications blockade, you can write to Mark demanding Jon’s reinstatement.

We ask that, if possible, folks make the effort to call. Emails and tweets are easy to send, but they’re easy to ignore too. Phone calls are much more effective at disrupting business as usual.

Be creative. Complaints and messages of support are good, but so is playing music down the phone, taking the mick and tying up the phone lines in any way possible. Call back and call often.
